What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes (GD) develops during pregnancy when your body can’t make enough insulin to manage blood sugar levels effectively. It usually appears around the 24–28 week mark and is managed through diet, exercise, and sometimes medication.

After birth, most people’s blood sugar levels return to normal, but it’s still important to be mindful of your postpartum recovery — especially if you’re considering placenta encapsulation.

What Is Placenta Encapsulation?

Placenta encapsulation involves steaming, dehydrating, and grinding the placenta into a fine powder, then placing it into capsules for postpartum use. Many new parents choose this option to support their recovery naturally and holistically.

Commonly reported benefits include:

• Improved energy levels

• Balanced mood and emotional stability

• Support for milk supply

• Quicker physical healing

While scientific studies are still limited, many clients share that taking their placenta capsules helped them feel more grounded, balanced, and nourished during the postpartum period.

Placenta Encapsulation and Gestational Diabetes: Is It Safe?

If you had gestational diabetes, placenta encapsulation can still be an option — as long as it’s prepared safely and you stay in tune with your body during recovery.

At A Birth Connection, I take special care when working with clients who experienced gestational diabetes. Each placenta is handled using strict sanitation, food safety, and temperature-controlled dehydration methods to ensure your capsules are prepared safely and effectively.

Here’s what I recommend:

1. Share your gestational diabetes history with me so I can tailor your encapsulation process accordingly.

2. Keep open communication with your healthcare provider — your OB-GYN, midwife, or endocrinologist — especially if your blood sugar levels are still stabilizing postpartum.

3. Start slowly and listen to your body. Begin with one capsule a day and observe how your body responds before increasing the dosage.

Properly prepared placenta capsules do not contain harmful bacteria or significant glucose levels, and current research does not show any negative effects for people recovering from gestational diabetes.

What the Research Says

While research on placenta encapsulation is still growing, current studies suggest that it’s safe when handled and prepared correctly.

• A 2017 study in Archives of Women’s Mental Health found small hormonal traces (like estrogen and progesterone) in placenta capsules, but not enough to significantly alter hormone levels.

• Research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology found no harmful bacteria in properly prepared placenta samples.

There’s no evidence that consuming your placenta affects blood sugar or increases any risk after gestational diabetes. However, every body is unique, so monitoring your own well-being is key.

Listening to Your Body

If you choose placenta encapsulation after gestational diabetes, mindfulness is your best guide. Notice how your body feels each day as you begin taking your capsules:

• Is your energy steady?

• Are your moods balanced?

• Does your blood sugar feel stable?

If something doesn’t feel quite right, pause the capsules and reach out to your healthcare provider — and to me at A Birth Connection — for support.

Final Thoughts

Placenta encapsulation can be a powerful, nurturing way to honor your body’s journey through pregnancy and support your recovery — even after gestational diabetes.

At A Birth Connection, my goal is to provide safe, compassionate, and evidence-informed placenta services so you can feel confident and cared for during your postpartum healing.

Your placenta tells a story of nourishment and strength — and when prepared safely and mindfully, it can continue to support you as you step into this new chapter of motherhood.
